Hi so sorry to bother you but I want to learn how to make IFs, so I've been using twine and trying to learn how to use sugarcube but like how 😭😭😭
Babes I am so embarassed I'm literally studying computer science oh my god. Like in theory I know that programming languages are different but this is the first time java vs javascript is really hitting,,,,
Do you have links to any resources you used to learn? Like how you randomized variables (for the 'i'm into both men and women' option's gender setting) and how to do the pronoun thing properly, and stuff like the codex, plus if you can how you customized that sidebar
Thank you and I'm sorry to bother you!!
No worries at all!! Here's a masterlist of Twine resources you can use for the things you mentioned and more. It includes tutorials for beginners, including multiple different ways on how to code pronouns, CSS customization and templates for your game, etc.
For the randomization of variables, the line of code you want is <<set $variable to either("option1", "option2", "option3", ...)>>
But for my purposes specifically, to maintain an even 2 male/2 female LI split, I had to use the code in a little more convoluted way since randomizing all the genders with that code could end up with an "uneven" balance (like 3 out of 4 LIs being randomized as female, or all LIs ending up as male).
If you want to do something similar with having a 2 male/2 female LI randomization, here's how I went about it, though I'm sure there's a much quicker way to do it. Mind you I was a total beginner when I wrote this haha:
Basically what this does is randomize R's gender and randomize X's gender first to either male or female with the first two lines. If R and X are both set as male or female, then A and D will both be set as the opposite. If R and X are set as different genders, however, then A's gender will be randomized next. Then, based on whether A is male or female, D's gender will be selected to complete the 2/2 split.
Hope this helps!!

hello! i'm a new college student, and the syllabus says c and java are the languages they'll teach in the first two semester. could you direct me to some resources or someone who could help if you're not interested? no pressure, thank you!
hey! i'm unsure how helpful my advice will be because i've only dabbled in c and java, but i can certainly point you in the right direction. i know how much of a pain searching for beginner-friendly resources can be. good luck in your studies, and welcome to college!
GENERAL:
there are a lot of community-curated resources in the tag awesome-list on github. check it out here, and have fun going through them all because you'll never escape
w3schools is great for referencing
this basically gives you the equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science and is completely free
freecomputerbooks has a c and java language category. i can't recommend you specific books though
i only discovered wikiversity was a thing when i became an adult, which is a right shame. there's free courses for computer science and information technology
C LANGUAGE:
harvard has an online course called cs50 you can find for free on freecodecamp's youtube channel (the cs50 website also includes notes for the course). it introduces computer science (and the basics of c) pretty nicely
wikiversity's "C Programming" and its wikibook companion
freecodecamp's "C Programming Handbook for Beginners"
if you ever get confused about pointers: A Tutorial on Pointers and Arrays in C
commonly asked c programming questions & answers are in this FAQ
the article "What A C Programmer Should Know About Memory" (a bit more intermediate)
JAVA LANGUAGE:
the wikibook "Java Programming"
wikiversity's java portal has links to both internal and external java resources. i'd recommend looking through it
freecodecamp's "The Java Handbook – Learn Java Programming for Beginners"
freecodecamp's online course "Java Programming for Beginners"
dev.java's "Learn Java"
the free training course offered by oracle
if anyone else has anything to add, feel free to chime in! i hope this helps :)

In a world where new programming languages pop up every few months, and job market demands shift faster than ever, you might wonder — “Is Java still worth learning?”
If you’re still learning Java, you’re not behind the times — you’re actually setting yourself up for long-term success. Java has evolved alongside the tech industry for nearly three decades, and today, it remains one of the most powerful, stable, and job-friendly programming languages out there.

Java: A Language That Outlasts Trends
Let’s be honest — some programming languages skyrocket in popularity and then vanish just as fast. Java isn’t one of them.
Born in the mid-1990s, Java has consistently been used to build enterprise-level software, mobile apps, banking systems, IoT devices, and even cloud-native applications. It powers everything from Netflix’s recommendation engine to ATM banking software and Android mobile apps.
Some of the biggest names in tech — Amazon, TCS, Infosys, Oracle, Google run core operations using Java. Why? Because it’s:

Hiya!! I am taking a coding course at a University. While it's excellent for learning how to use a lot of complicated concepts in programming, we don't really get to do any projects or create anything yet. I was wondering how to get into that. Are there any resources you might recommend?
Hiya!! 💞
Goodie, you want to build your own projects! That's so good, I love project building! Now, it depends what you're coding (the languages + specific area) e.g. are you learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript (Website building) or is it like Python/Java/C# idk but you get what I'm asking for here, the projects you want to learn and build depends on what you're learning in the first place! But I will give some general advice!
🎥 YouTube
I love YouTube so much, there are thousands of videos on that site for any programming language to building pretty much anything! What I did when I started off was the simple search of "[The coding language] beginner project" and then I get to see what I can build. Now if you get stuck on a snippet of code, Google it and there are sites that will explain it for you. Now, don't fall for tutorial hell where you're watching tutorial after tutorial videos but watching them will give you a good foundation!
🔍 Google
Similar to what I said for the YouTube way, you can Google the same question and it will give you a bunch of project ideas, how to even do them and all you can do also is add more on top, what I mean is don't just watch or read about a project idea, see how you can twist it your own style e.g. recently I watched a React.js tutorial on how to make a to-do app! My twist was I styled it different by adding a frog theme. So the tutorial was my foundation and I just added on top of that to further exercise my skills!
🌐 GitHub
Have a hub for all your projects! After creating your projects, you don't just want it sitting on your computer, you can put it online! I use GitHub - it's a place where you can store all your projects, have a save history so you can go back on old code, even share the static webpages you make (using HTML/CSS/JavaScript) with other people online! The Site | How to use GitHub | Check out my GitHub for reference
📚 Online Courses
Many online platforms offer project-based courses. Websites like Udemy, Coursera, Codecademy and FreeCodeCamp can guide you through creating practical projects step by step. I use Udemy for learning and there are courses that are like "Build 9 web development projects blah blah blah" they're actually really good! BUT you do have to pay for them but if you can't find a good project on YouTube to follow or you can visualise or understand the articles online on how to build one, I suggest getting a course because someone teaches you how to make the project. Udemy is fairly cheap during their sales, going down from £59.99 to £10.99!
🤗 Collaboration
Reach out to classmates to build together, someone is bound to have an idea for something! Collaborative projects not only expand your skill set but also let you learn from others. Great skill to have! You can even collab on GitHub projects - which I am doing right now with people I've met through Tumblr (checkout our project)!
Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day! Start with small projects, gradually challenging yourself with larger ones. The journey of creating is just as exciting as the finished project itself. Happy coding! 😎🙌🏾💻💗

Mastering Java: Your Comprehensive Guide to Programming Excellence
Embarking on the journey of mastering Java is akin to entering a realm of endless possibilities. Java, a versatile and widely-utilized programming language, offers a broad spectrum of applications, from crafting web and mobile applications to powering robust enterprise systems. Whether you are a novice in the realm of coding or a seasoned programmer looking to broaden your skill set, the path to proficiency in Java is an exciting one.
In this comprehensive guide, we will be your guiding light through the intricacies of Java, starting from the foundational basics and progressing to the more advanced aspects of the language. Our objective is to equip you with the knowledge and skills that form a robust and unshakable foundation for your journey into the vibrant world of Java. Fasten your seatbelt as we embark on this exhilarating exploration, charting a course that will empower you to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of software development.
Here's a 8-step guide to effectively learn Java
Step 1: Setting Up Your Development Environment
Your journey to becoming a proficient Java developer commences with setting up your development environment. The essential components are the Java Development Kit (JDK) and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) like Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA. These tools aren't just convenient; they're the gears that will drive your Java programming endeavors. They streamline the coding process, provide useful features, and offer an organized workspace, making your coding experience efficient and enjoyable.
Step 2: The Foundation - Learning the Basics
With your development environment ready, it's time to delve into the fundamental building blocks of Java. Begin by acquainting yourself with data types, variables, operators, and control structures. These are the nuts and bolts of the language, and a solid grasp of these concepts is essential. You'll find an abundance of online tutorials and beginner-friendly Java books to assist you at this stage.
Step 3: Navigating the World of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
The object-oriented programming (OOP) approach is well known in Java. To harness the true power of Java, immerse yourself in the world of OOP. Understand the concepts of classes, objects, inheritance, encapsulation, and polymorphism. This knowledge forms the bedrock of Java programming and enables you to design efficient, organized, and scalable code.
Step 4: Mastering Data Structures and Algorithms
Data structures (such as arrays, lists, and sets) and algorithms are the secret sauce behind solving real-world problems efficiently. As you progress, dive into the world of data structures and algorithms. These are the tools that will empower you to handle complex tasks and optimize your code. They're your go-to assets for creating efficient and responsive applications.
Step 5: The Art of Exception Handling
Java boasts a robust exception-handling mechanism. Understanding how to handle exceptions properly is not just an add-on skill; it's a vital aspect of writing reliable code. Exception handling ensures that your code gracefully manages unexpected situations, preventing crashes and delivering a seamless user experience.
Step 6: Exploring Input and Output Operations
